Wyoming rodeo fans will soon have the option to purchase special state license plates that showcase their love for the Western sport. This initiative was established by Gov. Mark Gordon signing Senate File 121 into law, which will create rodeo-themed license plates available next year. The bill was inspired by a request from PETA to eliminate the bucking horse logo from the state’s license plates.
The bill was sponsored by State Sen. Brian Boner in response to PETA’s campaign against the bucking horse logo on Wyoming license plates. The new rodeo-themed license plates will allow individuals to donate $20 or more to support rodeo programs at the University of Wyoming and Wyoming community colleges. The plates themselves will cost the same as other Wyoming license plates.
rodeo is deeply embedded in Wyoming’s Western culture, being the official sport of the state. The bucking horse logo has historical significance, dating back to 1918 and possibly earlier. The new license plates will cost the state $2,000 to create, and the design process will begin now that the bill has been passed into law.
