Woodbine and HBPA Reach Two-Year Contract Agreement for 2025 Racing Season

Woodbine Entertainment and the HBPA of Ontario have reached a two-year contract agreement that will see the 2025 racing season begin on April 26. The deal includes a $5.7 million increase in purses, with $64.7 million committed for this year and $65 million for 2026, along with 128-day race meets. The 2025 campaign will conclude on Dec. 14.

Woodbine Entertainment CEO Michael Copeland emphasized the importance of supporting the horse racing industry in Ontario and driving long-term growth and sustainability. HBPA president Sue Leslie expressed gratitude for the stability provided by the agreement, allowing horse owners and trainers to plan for the future. The $1-million King’s Plate, the first jewel of Canada’s Triple Crown, will be run on Aug. 16 at Woodbine Racetrack as part of the upcoming season.

Both parties are hopeful for the future of horse racing in Ontario and are committed to ongoing dialogue and collaboration. Woodbine will release its 2025 stakes schedule soon, with a focus on supporting the sport and its participants. The agreement reflects a positive step forward for racing in the region, providing much-needed stability and support for members during uncertain economic times.
