A woman in San Joaquin County was arrested after 27 horses were found dead and others were malnourished on her properties in Clements. The animals were discovered during a search warrant executed by animal services, with 16 horses being transferred to an equine rescue and four being euthanized due to neglect. The woman, identified as Jan Johnson, faces charges including cruelty to an animal, threatening a public official, and possession of a short-barrel shotgun.
Jan Johnson, 62, owned the farms where the neglected animals were located, with one on North McIntire Road and another on Atkins Road. She had a warrant out for her arrest for making threats to a school, employees, and officers. Johnson has been booked into the San Joaquin County Jail and is set to be arraigned in court on Friday. The town of Clements is located about 40 miles southeast of Sacramento and 23 miles northeast of Stockton.
