Wild Horses and Burros Available for Adoption in Butte County

The Bureau of Land Management is offering 28 wild horses and 12 burros for adoption in Butte County this weekend. The animals can be previewed on Saturday morning, followed by a silent auction and then open adoptions until Sunday at noon. Adoptions are on a first-come, first-served basis with a $125 adoption fee.

BLM Public Affairs Officer Jeff Fontana explained that the adoption event is necessary to manage wild herds when populations exceed the limits that the natural landscape can support. All the horses have been dewormed and vaccinated, but potential adopters should be aware that these are wild animals that require professional training.

The adoption event aims to help manage wild herds by setting population limits due to limited feed and water on the natural landscape. The horses and burros have been prepared for adoption with deworming and vaccinations, but they will require professional training as they are not accustomed to being around humans.
