Wild Horse Plains Back Country Horsemen Host Comprehensive Horse and Mule Packing Clinic

The Wild Horse Plains Back Country Horsemen held a Horse and Mule Packing Clinic in Plains, Montana, attracting students from various locations. The clinic featured five experienced instructors who provided hands-on demonstrations and valuable insights on packing accessories and techniques. Topics covered included weight limits for animals, attaching cargo safely, and maintaining the well-being and comfort of the animals.

The instructors emphasized the importance of properly attaching harnesses, preparing and weighing packs, and ensuring a balanced load for the mule’s safety while on the trail. Students were assigned mules to inspect, fit with harnesses and pack saddles, and load with cargo. The Wild Horse Plains BCH is actively involved in maintaining local trails and providing packing support throughout the summer, with standout alumna Patricia Petrina embarking on a 3,000-mile journey from Mexico to Canada with her mustangs, quarter horse, and dog.

The clinic attracted students of all ages and sizes, with the youngest student being 6-month-old Callon Stowers. The instructors shared their knowledge and experiences, including humorous stories of packing mishaps, to provide a comprehensive learning experience for attendees. The event highlighted the importance of equine safety, proper packing techniques, and the dedication of the Wild Horse Plains BCH to trail maintenance and support.
