Clearwater Regional Fire Rescue Services welcomed a new ladder truck, Unit 604, to their fleet this week with a “Push In Ceremony” at Station 60 in Rocky Mountain House. The brand new Rosenbauer 104’ Cobra Platform is the first of its kind in the fire department’s service, featuring a Cummins X15 600hp engine and a Hale Qmax 1750 GPM pump for various rescue capabilities.
Before the truck was officially welcomed into the station, community members and children had the chance to explore the new unit. The dedication concluded with a public radio transmission announcing the truck is ready for service. The Push-In Ceremony has a historical significance, dating back to the 17th century when hand-drawn fire engines had to be pushed back into the station after every call.
While the tradition of physically pushing fire trucks into the bay is no longer feasible due to the size of modern units, fire departments have adapted the ceremony to maintain the tradition. Some departments now have one crew member back the truck into the bay while others walk alongside in uniform, symbolizing the act of pushing in and honoring the dedication and unity within the fire service.
