The Exceptional Riders Program in Harbor Springs is seeking volunteers for their upcoming spring session. The program, which was formed in 1983, provides horseback riding lessons for individuals with physical, mental, and emotional support needs. Volunteers play a crucial role in helping students meet their goals and enhance their physical and mental well-being. The program offers new experiences for both students and volunteers, with a focus on patience, kindness, reliability, and a sense of humor.
The program, which meets at Rising Hope Equestrian Center, offers classes that consist of mounted exercises, games, and riding instructions. Volunteers are essential to the success of the program and are encouraged to have a willingness to learn and work with the students. The relationship between horse and student is highlighted as being life-changing, with students growing in confidence, balance, and coordination through horseback riding. The program is a beautiful reminder of the power of perseverance, kindness, and equine therapy.
One special horse, Rose, is coming out of retirement for the upcoming spring session. Rose, a beloved red roan, is known for her ability to connect with riders and help them progress in confidence, communication, and riding skills. The program dates for the 2025 Spring Session are set, with student orientation on April 3, 2025, and volunteer training on April 5, 2025. The program is still in need of volunteers and new students, with classes taking place each Thursday from April 10, 2025, through May 22, 2025.
