Deserae Turner, a 22-year-old Utah woman who survived a shot to the head as a child, entered hospice care after learning she is dealing with a deadly infection. Despite nearly 50 surgeries, including 16 brain surgeries, Deserae has decided to prepare for the end by surrounding herself with comfort and loved ones. Her final wish of riding a horse again was fulfilled by friends and family, allowing her to experience a nostalgic and emotional moment.
Deserae’s attackers, Colter Peterson and Jayzon Decker, were 17 at the time of the crime and were each sentenced to at least 15 years in prison in 2018. The pair plotted to lure Deserae to an isolated dry canal bed, where they shot her in the head and left her for dead. Decker kept the spent shell casing as a memento, which was later found displayed in his bedroom. Deserae, who managed to graduate high school and get married despite lifelong disabilities, expressed her feelings towards her attackers during their sentencing.
Deserae’s family has set up a GoFundMe to help cover her funeral costs and end-of-life care, as Deserae has made the brave decision not to treat her deadly infection and to go on hospice. She expressed her readiness to say goodbye, believing in life after death and being prepared for what comes next. Deserae’s story of resilience and strength in the face of adversity has touched many, as she continues to inspire others with her courage.
