One horse in Essex County, Massachusetts tested positive for EHV-1 and was euthanized. The Equine Disease Communication Center (EDCC) provides verified equine disease reports through their EDCC Health Watch program, which is supported by industry donations.
EHV-1, a highly contagious herpesvirus, can cause respiratory disease, abortion in broodmares, and Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM). Signs of EHV-1 infection in horses include fever, cough, decreased appetite, depression, and nasal discharge. Pregnant mares may show no signs before aborting.
EHV-1 is easily spread through close contact with infected horses or contaminated equipment. Current vaccines may reduce viral shedding but do not protect against the neurologic form of the disease. Implementing routine biosecurity practices is crucial for disease prevention and control.
