Trainer Bob Baffert has a chance to win the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby and Santa Anita Oaks in the same year, a feat he has only accomplished once before in 1999. This year, he has two contenders in each race, including Citizen Bull and Barnes in the Derby, and Tenma and Silent Law in the Oaks.
Citizen Bull, last year’s 2-year-old male champion, will be making his first start since winning the Robert B. Lewis. Baffert is confident in his abilities, but acknowledges that the Santa Anita Derby is a tough race, with Journalism as the horse to beat. Baeza, trained by John Shirreffs, is another key contender in the race.
In the Santa Anita Oaks, Tenma will be aiming for her fifth win in six starts and fourth graded-stakes victory. Silent Law, also trained by Baffert, will be trying two turns for the first time. Baffert believes that Tenma is a very aggressive filly who performs well over longer distances, while Silent Law has shown speed and potential in previous races.
