Kate Shoemaker had to say goodbye to her 2022 World Para Championship silver and bronze medal-winning mare, Quiana, due to a freak accident in which the mare shattered her hip. Quiana was a 10-year-old Rhinelander mare bred by Brigitta Wego and produced to small tour level by professional rider Nicole Wego. The pair had a successful show career, culminating in their participation in the 2022 World Para Championships in Denmark.
Shoemaker and Quiana made their show debut at the CPEDI Doha in Qatar, winning the team test and freestyle. They went on to win individual silver and contribute to the U.S. Para dressage Team’s team bronze effort. The duo continued to compete in various CPEDI events in 2023, winning 11 out of 13 tests. However, tragedy struck in January 2025 when Quiana had to be put to sleep after the accident.
Despite the devastating loss, Shoemaker expressed gratitude for those who were with Quiana in her final moments and reflected on the special bond she shared with the mare. Quiana was not insured, and Shoemaker emphasized that the decision to euthanize her was made to prevent further suffering. The loss of Quiana was a heartbreaking end to what was expected to be many more successful years together in competition.
