The CCI4*-S was introduced in 2021 as part of the US Equestrian Open Eventing Series, which consists of 20 qualifying events across the country. The Series awards $50,000 in prize money to the top three combinations at the end of the qualifying period, with an additional $200,000 in prize money at the Final in October. The goal of the Series is to invest in future eventing athletes and promote the sport to a wider audience.
