Top 10 Issues to Watch During Florida’s Annual Legislative Session

Florida lawmakers will begin their annual legislative session next week, where they will consider a variety of bills. Some key issues to watch include the proposed $115.6 billion budget for the upcoming fiscal year, potential revisions to condominium laws following the Surfside collapse, and education matters such as later daily start times for high schools.

Other important topics on the agenda include potential changes to election laws to make it harder to put constitutional amendments on the ballot, a proposal to eliminate a requirement for horse tracks to hold races in order to offer gambling, and the possibility of repealing a law preventing people under 21 from buying rifles. Additionally, lawmakers may consider providing hurricane-related assistance and implementing the “Rural Renaissance” plan to support rural areas.

Governor DeSantis has also proposed tax cuts, including the elimination of a tax on commercial leases and sales-tax holidays for items like ammunition and guns. The Senate is moving forward with a plan to make changes to water management districts and address Everglades restoration, focusing on flood control and transparency.
