Title: Kerala Tourist Group Escapes Terror Attack in Kashmir by Choosing Alternative Sightseeing

A 23-member tourist group from Kerala narrowly escaped the terror attack at Kashmir’s Pahalgam as they opted out of going for a horse ride and instead travelled to another nearby location for sight-seeing. Members of the group, which included a child, told reporters at the Kerala House in New Delhi that had they opted for horse-riding, then they too might have been among those killed in the terror attack that claimed 26 lives.

"The rates quoted for the horse ride were too expensive for us. So we took a taxi to another location. From there, we were on the way to Baisaran when we heard some loud sounds, shops were being closed and people were running away.

"We initially did not realise what was happening and asked our guide to take us to another sight-seeing location. But he asked whether we wanted to be alive or go for sightseeing," one of the women in the group said.

She said that they were taken back to the place from where they had taken the taxi and then taken back to their hotel rooms. "When we reached the hotel, we saw on the news what had happened and how we narrowly escaped the same fate," she said.

"If we had not avoided the horse-ride, we too would have been among those killed," one of the men in the group said. They also alleged that there was no security at any of the tourist locations. "There were security personnel on the roads to these places, but no security people at the locations. Probably that is why they attacked that place," they said.

Terrorists opened fire at a tourist location near Kashmir’s Pahalgam town on Tuesday afternoon, killing 26 people, mostly tourists, in what is the deadliest attack in the Valley since the Pulwama strike in 2019.

A 23-member tourist group from Kerala narrowly escaped a terror attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, by opting out of a horse ride due to high costs. Instead, they chose to visit another nearby location. As they were traveling, they heard loud noises and witnessed chaos as people fled the area, prompting them to seek safety.

One member of the group recounted how their guide advised them to prioritize their safety over sightseeing. After returning to their hotel, they learned about the attack that claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists, and realized they had narrowly avoided a tragic fate.

The group expressed concerns about the lack of security at tourist sites, noting that while there were personnel on the roads, there was no security presence at the locations themselves. They suggested that this absence may have contributed to the attack, which was the deadliest in the region since the 2019 Pulwama strike.

Title: "Kerala Tourists Escape Terror Attack in Kashmir by Skipping Costly Horse Ride"

A group of 23 tourists from Kerala had a narrow escape from a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, after they decided to skip a planned horse ride due to high costs. Instead of heading toward the usual tourist path, they diverted to a nearby location for sight-seeing—an unexpected decision that likely saved their lives.

A Costly Ride Turned Life-Saving

The group, which included a child, had originally considered horse riding, a popular activity in Pahalgam. However, the high prices made them change their plans and take a taxi elsewhere. “The rates quoted for the horse ride were too expensive for us. So we took a taxi to another location. From there, we were on the way to Baisaran when we heard some loud sounds, shops were being closed and people were running away,” one of the tourists said.

Initially unaware of what was unfolding, they turned to their guide for direction. “We initially did not realise what was happening and asked our guide to take us to another sight-seeing location. But he asked whether we wanted to be alive or go for sightseeing,” the woman recalled.

Shock and Realization at the Hotel

The group was quickly brought back to their taxi pick-up point and then escorted to their hotel rooms. “When we reached the hotel, we saw on the news what had happened and how we narrowly escaped the same fate,” she added. Another member of the group reflected on how close the brush with danger had been. “If we had not avoided the horse-ride, we too would have been among those killed,” he said.

Security Concerns Raised by Survivors

While the group was thankful to be safe, they were also vocal about what they saw as major lapses in security at tourist hotspots. “There were security personnel on the roads to these places, but no security people at the locations. Probably that is why they attacked that place,” one of them said. The attack, which occurred near Pahalgam on a Tuesday afternoon, left 26 people dead, making it the most lethal incident in Kashmir since the 2019 Pulwama terror strike. Most of the victims were tourists.
