Stephen and Michelle Holland, sheep and beef farmers in Hyde, have ventured into horse trekking, motivated primarily by a desire to share the stunning views of their property rather than solely for financial gain. After receiving positive feedback from their children following a memorable horseback ride, they decided to create a sideline business that allows horse owners to stay and ride on their farm.
To facilitate this new venture, the Hollands installed a marked track, upgraded a stone hut, and built hitching rails and overnight horse pens. They launched a website and developed a health and safety plan, welcoming their first riding group last October. The initiative has attracted interest from horse owners seeking safer, more scenic riding experiences away from public lands.
The couple has found joy in seeing visitors appreciate their property, hosting around 13 riding groups over the summer, many of whom returned for more. While Mrs. Holland reflects on her own childhood riding experiences, she acknowledges the challenges of marketing and social media but remains committed to improving their operation for the next season.
