The Mare and Foal Sanctuary is currently caring for 130 equines across its four sites, with many of them in critical need of intervention due to life-threatening situations. The charity also monitors around 200 horses in the south west after concerns raised by the public about their welfare.
The sanctuary has seen an increase in workload during the colder months, with many horses and ponies suffering from neglect and lack of basic care. The charity is working tirelessly to support struggling owners and improve the welfare of the equines, especially in light of the cost of living crisis impacting their ability to provide adequate care.
Rhodri Samuel, the chief executive of The Mare and Foal Sanctuary, emphasized the importance of responsible land management and the need for support from generous donors to continue rescuing and caring for horses and ponies in need. The charity works to investigate welfare concerns, collaborate with other agencies, and provide guidance to owners to ensure the well-being of the animals.
