The Healing Power of Horses: Equine Therapy at North Country RIDE

North Country RIDE is a nonprofit organization that provides equine-assisted therapeutic activities for individuals with physical, cognitive, emotional, or behavioral disabilities. The organization uses horses to treat a variety of conditions, including cerebral palsy, autism, traumatic brain injuries, anxiety, and blindness. The horses at North Country RIDE are described as emotionally intelligent and nonjudgmental, creating a safe space for individuals to process their feelings.

The stable at North Country RIDE currently houses 10 horses of varying breeds, allowing people with different physical abilities to participate in horseback riding. The horses are retired from previous careers and must have the right demeanor for therapy work. Therapeutically, horseback riding helps increase core strength, balance, and emotional well-being, particularly for individuals with autism who may struggle to communicate their needs until they are on a horse.

North Country RIDE offers one-hour therapeutic riding classes one day a week for five to six weeks from April to November. The cost is $250, with scholarships available for lower-income families. In addition to therapeutic programming, the organization offers a horsemanship program for those looking to enhance their riding skills. North Country RIDE is seeking volunteers aged 14 and older to help with classes and activities, with volunteer orientations available for training.
