The Equine Legacy Conservation Project: Preserving Endangered Horse Breeds

The Equine Legacy Conservation Project is a collaborative effort by a writer, photographer, and videographer to raise awareness about endangered and rare horse breeds around the world. Through their work, they aim to educate people about the hundreds of horse breeds at risk of extinction and inspire conservation efforts before it’s too late. The team has documented seven unique breeds in different countries, including the Clydesdale in Scotland and the Marwari horse in India.

The project has resulted in a coffee table book titled Fading Hoofprints and a documentary series, with the first episode launching in February 2025. The team conducted extensive research drawing on information from organizations like the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and found that almost a third of horse breeds are endangered. The goal of the Equine Legacy Conservation Project is to highlight the unique genetic diversity of each breed and emphasize the importance of preserving their history and role in the equine world.

Through their project, the team hopes to inspire awe and appreciation for these endangered breeds, as well as encourage more conservation efforts and awareness. By sharing the stories of breeders and the landscapes where these horses live, they aim to create a platform for others to learn about and be inspired by these unique breeds. Ultimately, the team believes that increasing awareness and education about these endangered breeds will help continue their legacy for future generations.
