Philadelphia has a long history of horse stables, with some of the oldest stables dating back to the late 1800s. The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club in North Philadelphia has been a part of the city’s tradition for nearly 100 years, teaching youth to ride and supported by organizations like the Black Cowboys Association and Work to Ride.
The Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, founded in 2004, has been a mainstay in Philadelphia for decades, with horses initially coming from livestock auctions in Pennsylvania. The club has received support from various organizations and events, including a benefit in 2009 and achieving tax-exempt status in 2015.
In recent years, the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club has moved to new stables in Fairmount Park and gained attention with the release of the Netflix movie “Concrete Cowboys.” The equestrians from the club can be seen riding through North Philadelphia, showcasing one of the city’s longest-standing traditions.
