The Art of Horsemanship: A Look into Dressage and Warren County’s Equestrian Community

Horses have been a part of human history for millennia, with the ancient Greeks learning the Art of Horsemanship from Xenophon over 2000 years ago. dressage, the highest expression of horse training, can be traced back to ancient Greece and involves training horses to perform controlled movements. In Warren County, Ohio, Angela Carter runs Dark Horse dressage, where she trains horses like Romeo, a Percheron/Suffolk Punch, to compete in dressage competitions.

Angela Carter started working with horses at a young age and eventually focused on dressage, training and competing in the sport. She found Romeo, a former Civil War reenactment horse, and trained him to compete in dressage, teaching him movements like the canter and lead changes. The dressage arena features letters on the walls, which are believed to have originated from the Imperial German Court, marking specific points for riders to perform movements.

Angela and Romeo’s hard work and communication paid off, leading them to win a gold medal in the Grand Prix competition. The Grand Prix is the pinnacle of horsemanship, featuring complicated movements like pirouettes and the piaffe. Angela continues to train young adults in dressage and is excited about her new colt, Rolls Royce, who shows promise in the sport. Angela Carter represents the horse community in Warren County, Ohio, as a skilled horse-master and equine artist.
