The Academy Program: Making Horse Showing More Accessible

The Academy Program was created in the 1990s as a more accessible entry level division for competitors in American Saddlebred show barns and horse shows. This division allows riding students to compete on lesson horses against riders of the same age and skill level, with low entry fees and the same horse being ridden by multiple riders. The program has expanded to include various classes and breeds of horses, providing a valuable learning experience for riders.

Academy classes are well-filled at most shows and offer riders the opportunity to compete without owning or leasing a horse. Riders gain experience in the ring and enjoy the thrill of competition, with the chance to compete on different horses from show to show. The program has created a market for older horses and those not competitive in performance classes, with some riders eventually moving on to purchase a show horse or compete in smaller shows on their own former Academy horse.

The Academy Program has grown to include regional championship shows and a National Academy Show, where riders compete in elimination classes. This program has made horse showing more accessible and comparable in cost to other popular sports for both youth and adults, providing a valuable entry level competition opportunity for riders of all skill levels.
