During the recent wildfires in Los Angeles County, 16-year-old equestrian Kalyna Fedorowycz saved a horse named Sovereignty by leading him to safety through high winds, flaming debris, and smoke on a 14-mile journey that took four hours with breaks. Her father and others praised her bravery and determination in rescuing the horse.
The severity of the fires was attributed to factors related to rising global temperatures, including reduced rainfall, strong winds, and drought conditions. Researchers warn that Los Angeles will become drier and more flammable with continued fossil fuel burning, which is causing the earth’s temperature to rise.
Horses and other animals are often in danger during wildfires, and even if they survive, smoke inhalation can have severe health effects. While not everyone can save a horse from a wildfire, there are opportunities to support those rescuing horses in Los Angeles County and reduce the risk of wildfires by taking steps to reduce rising global temperatures.
