Swiss Equestrian Center Faces Hurdles in Opening West Stockbridge Riding School

Dr. Dory Klotz Czech and Dr. Gabriel Kaufman are seeking a special permit to open an equestrian riding center in West Stockbridge, offering lessons on a historic 63-acre estate. The business, Berkshire Pony Club, will have seven horses, including a Swiss show jumper and Irish ponies, and will operate by appointment only to avoid overcrowding and maintain a good environment for the horses. The property will undergo changes, such as removing a tennis court to create an outdoor arena, and will require the construction of a septic system and well.

Concerns raised during the Planning Board hearing included issues with road maintenance, drainage, and traffic on the narrow dirt road leading to the property. The board requested detailed drainage and grading plans, as well as expert drafts of the lighting to be installed on the arena. Abutters expressed concerns about added traffic, customers getting lost, and the use of the facility on weekends. The Planning Board has the authority to set conditions on the special permit, which could include limitations on hours of operation and other features of the business.

Czech’s U.S. visa application is dependent on the success of the business, making the special permit crucial for her immigration status. The board will conduct a site visit and continue the hearing to address remaining concerns, such as road maintenance, drainage, and traffic issues. The business plans to offer lessons from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with adult instruction on Saturdays, and will focus on providing a safe and comfortable environment for both the horses and clients.
