Strengthening Ties: RCAF and USAF Collaborate on Airfield Rapid Damage Repair Training

From December 16-20, 2024, the 801st RED HORSE Squadron hosted a Rapid Damage Repair course at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, with members of the Royal Canadian Air Force and United States Air Force participating. The course focused on repairing airfield craters using methods like crushed stone repairs and rapid-set concrete and asphalt, ensuring planes can quickly return to the air. The training showcased the Expeditionary Airfield Damage Repair capability introduced in 2024, with a focus on austere locations and smaller, more compact kits.

For the RCAF, participation in the course was crucial in rebuilding a capability that had diminished over decades, as resources and training shifted to other priorities. The collaboration with the USAF not only enhanced technical skills but also fostered interoperability and mutual trust between the forces. The RCAF is now working on developing a medium-scale Airfield Damage Repair capability informed by the lessons learned during the course, leveraging insights from international allies like the USAF, Royal Air Force, and Royal Australian Air Force.

The RDR course highlighted the shared commitment to readiness, innovation, and mutual support between the RCAF and USAF, ensuring strong partnerships in safeguarding global security. By understanding each other’s processes, building trust, and streamlining operations in contingency environments, the forces are enhancing their interoperability and overall readiness for future exercises. The collaboration also allows for the exchange of best practices and the incorporation of lessons learned into the development of new capabilities.
