Shelby Dutertre Wins First Place at 4-H Alberta Provincial Communications Competition

Sixteen-year-old Shelby Dutertre won first place at the 4-H Alberta 2025 Provincial Communications Competition with her presentation on equine colic, drawing from her personal experience with her horse Lux. The competition featured 14 competitors from seven regions and took place in Lacomb on April 5.

Dutertre, a member of the Lakeland Long Riders for four years, is a dedicated equestrian who spends weekends on the rodeo circuit with her horses. She received positive feedback from judges for her passion and knowledge on the topic, leading to her win. Despite initial nerves, she found comfort in realizing that everyone experiences anxiety in public speaking situations.

As a senior member and president of the Lakeland Long Riders club, Dutertre has gained confidence as a public speaker through her participation in communications events over the years. She values the life skills and support she has received from her parents, and is now considering pursuing a career as a veterinarian technician, inspired by her experience with her horse’s colic surgery.
