Severe Weather Forces Turf Paradise and Fair Grounds to Cancel Saturday Races

Severe weather conditions led to the cancellation of racing at Turf Paradise and Fair Grounds on Saturday. Turf Paradise’s biggest racing card of the year was called off due to heavy rain in the Phoenix area, with plans to reschedule the races for the following weekend pending approval from the Arizona Racing Commission. Fair Grounds rescheduled its Saturday card for Tuesday, extending its season to close with an extra day of racing during a final week that runs through the following Sunday.

Turf Paradise’s Phoenix Gold Cup, Cotton Fitzsimmons Stakes, Turf Paradise Derby, Arizona Oaks, and Queen of the Green Stakes, each worth $50,000 in added money, will be rescheduled for the following weekend pending approval. Fair Grounds moved its canceled Saturday card in its entirety to Tuesday, with a six-day racing week culminating in the Louisiana Derby day card on Saturday and closing day on Sunday. Gale-force winds and a neighborhood power failure were cited as reasons for the cancellation of Saturday’s card at Fair Grounds.
