Scientists at the Texas-based Ginormous Biosciences lab have successfully used CRISPR gene-editing technology to bring back the extinct Direwolf and early-equine ancestors known as Eohippus, or the ‘dawn horse.’ The lab is currently raising four Eohippus foals in Central Texas, which are described as cute with unique physical features.
The U.S. Equestrian organization is planning to incorporate Eohippus in halter classes at shows scheduled for the 2028 season. While riding classes are not possible due to their size, the organization is considering in-hand jumping, driving divisions, obedience, and trail classes for the Eohippus.
Ginormous Biosciences chose Eohippus as a species to prioritize in their “real-life Jurassic Park-project” due to their availability of DNA and their small, cuddly size. The lab believes their work will be important for the preservation of endangered animal species in the future, and Eohippus are seen as a family-friendly option compared to other extinct species.
