Santa Anita Park Confirmed as New Venue for 2028 Olympic Equestrian Events

The LA28 organizing committee announced that Santa Anita Park will host the 2028 Olympic equestrian events, replacing Galway Downs. Santa Anita Park has a history with the Olympics, having hosted the equestrian events at the 1984 Olympic Games. The venue includes veterinary facilities, grandstands, and barns to accommodate the competitions.

Santa Anita’s current owner, 1/ST Racing, has ties to Olympic equestrian sports, with CEO Belinda Stronach’s daughter being a jumper rider who has represented Canada. The 1984 Games saw the endurance portion of eventing held at a different location, but the IOC now requires all equestrian sports to be held in one place, leading to the selection of Santa Anita Park.

Local officials expressed disappointment at Galway Downs being replaced as the Olympic equestrian venue, with U.S. Rep. Darrel Issa calling the move arbitrary and unwarranted. The venue for para-equestrian events will be announced later, pending approval from the International Paralympic Committee Governing Board.
