Russell’s Equestrian Centre, founded in 1974, provides horse riding tuition and rescues horses and ponies through its work with The Epona Trust charity. The centre has been renting Lower Russell Fields from Itchen Valley Country Park for the last 10 years, but was recently informed by Eastleigh Borough Council that the license would not be reissued as the land is being used for an alpaca walking business.
The decision has left the owners of the centre, Carol Boulton, concerned about the future of the horses as they rely on the grazing fields to feed them. Without a license to operate, the centre may not be able to continue its work in rescuing and caring for the animals. Ms. Boulton emphasized that finding a new place for the horses is not as simple as finding an “airbnb for horses” as they are settled and happy at the centre.
Eastleigh Borough Council stated that the decision to use the land for the alpaca attraction was to generate revenue for the park’s upkeep. The council is now exploring alternative grazing options for the horses and offering grant support to help the centre continue its operations. The centre is facing uncertainty as it tries to find a solution to ensure the well-being of the horses and ponies in its care.
