Rose Hammond’s Emotional Journey to Her First City Winner as a Jockey

Rose Hammond, a 22-year-old jockey, achieved her first ever city win at The Valley on Saturday, just two weeks after moving to Melbourne to pursue more opportunities. She rode Princeofnottingham to victory in the BM84 (1600m) race, showcasing impressive timing and skill. Hammond, who has been racing for six years, expressed her excitement and gratitude for the win, especially since it was for her racing idol, Michelle Payne.

Hammond credited her success to the support of trainers Mick and Gwenda Johnstone in Echuca, as well as her parents. Despite her mother’s concerns due to Hammond’s past injuries, including a broken femur and multiple knockouts, Hammond’s passion for racing remains strong. She started in racing as a school kid in Echuca, working at stables and doing trackwork before pursuing a career as a jockey.

Having reduced her country claim to 1.5kg, Hammond now has a three kilo claim at provincials and city races. She is currently based around Flemington but also rides trackwork at Cranbourne and Mornington. Michelle Payne, the trainer of Princeofnottingham, praised Hammond’s riding skills and expressed surprise at the horse’s win in a higher class race. Hammond’s dedication and talent have earned her recognition and success in the competitive world of horse racing.
