MERRICKS Station Grounds is working on plans to build a roof over one of its arenas to support year-round equestrian services on the peninsula. The project has faced delays and cost overruns, but the club has independently costed it at $1.2m and has already raised $375,000 towards the goal. The roofed area will provide certainty and safety for riders, and the wider horse-related community contributes significantly to the peninsula economy.
The equestrian facilities at Merricks are currently shared by various clubs and individual riders, all developed through volunteer efforts. The group is aiming to have construction commenced by January/February of the following year and is seeking donations to reach their target. Tax deductible donations can be made through the Australian Sports Foundation, and substantial donations of over $100,000 will attract special benefits.
The club is asking for support from the community to help promote the sport of equestrian and ensure the success of the project. Sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses interested in making substantial contributions, and all donations will be recognized on the Honour Board at the Grounds. The group is hopeful that others will share their vision and help make the roof over the arena a reality.
