The first meeting of horse breeders in Punjab was recently held, with 40 breeders participating. The meeting was organized by Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (Gadvasu) to enhance technical knowledge about breeding horses. The director of extension education called for joint efforts to promote Punjab as a breeding state for horses, similar to dairy animals, and emphasized the need to preserve the pedigree and genetic characteristics of horses.
The vice-chancellor of Gadvasu highlighted the importance of forming a farmers’ collective to boost horse breeding and sports in the state. He mentioned that horse breeding is deeply rooted in rural culture and can provide both recreation and income. By implementing scientific practices in the management of horses, the performance level can be improved, adding value to breeding activities in Punjab and potentially boosting the state economy.
Breeders and scientists at the meeting expressed the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing horse breeding in Punjab. One breeder mentioned that such meetings provide essential guidance and direction for the future of horse breeding in the state. The university and state animal husbandry department are working together to develop a standardized system for horse breeding, with regular meetings planned to continue enhancing technical knowledge in this area.
