Revitalizing Youth Interest in Agriculture and Science: Le Sueur County 4-H’s Success Story

Le Sueur County 4-H is revitalizing youth interest in agriculture, health, and science-based initiatives following a dip in membership during the COVID-19 pandemic. The organization has been steadily rebuilding its programs, broadening its reach, and focusing on rural science programming to recruit and retain young people. Despite a slight decrease in individual enrollments, Le Sueur County 4-H has reached more kids and teens, with a total enrollment boost of nearly 19%.

One of the organization’s major initiatives has been expanding animal science programming beyond livestock showings at the county fair. Le Sueur County 4-H introduced a fitting clinic and saw 43 elementary-aged children attend an Animal Science Day Camp. Older 4-H members played a vital role in mentoring younger participants, particularly during day camps and the County Fair 101 program. The organization has also launched a new Agriculture Ambassador program and is focusing on recruiting younger alumni as volunteers.

Upcoming events for Le Sueur County 4-H include a public speaking workshop, a Taylor Swift-themed day camp, and a STEM-themed day camp. The organization will also host a Spring Pancake Breakfast to support leadership programs and provide more opportunities for families to learn about 4-H involvement. Le Sueur County 4-H continues its mission to provide enriching experiences for youth and build skills for adulthood.
