Retiring Prison Sergeant Rides Out on Horseback After 47 Years at California Institution for Men

John Bennett, a longtime resident of Chino, retired after 47 years of service at the California Institution for Men (CIM) in Chino. Starting his career in 1977, Bennett worked in various positions at the men’s prison, including patrolling on horseback as part of the field crop crew. During his time at CIM, he also served on the Special Emergency Response Team and received the Department’s Silver Star for his heroic actions during a riot in 2003.

In the late 1970s to early 1980s, CIM did not have walls or electrified fences, allowing Bennett to conduct perimeter checks and repair outer fences while maintaining security on the farm. He described the job as being like a cowboy for the day, enjoying the opportunity to work with horses Babe and Keno. Bennett’s dedication and leadership were recognized by staff at CIM as he rode out on horseback through the main gate to retire, with colleagues showing their appreciation for his courage, mentorship, and compassion.

Upon retiring, Bennett plans to go camping, travel, and work on his 1955 Chevy, while keeping his colleagues who continue to work behind the walls in his prayers for their safety. Throughout his career, Bennett demonstrated a strong commitment to serving and protecting others, leaving a lasting impact on the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
