Marrissa Jones, a participant in the Queensland Off-The-Track Program, is a skilled racehorse retrainer who founded her own equestrian business, Summit Equine. She began retraining racehorses in 2015 and has since developed a passion for working with retired racehorses. Marrissa’s experience in the racing industry, including owning and training her own successful standardbred racehorse, has helped her develop her skills in retraining retired racehorses.
Despite her parents not being involved in the equestrian world, Marrissa’s stepfather’s investment in a racehorse led her to begin working with retired racehorses. She learned to ride horses that were only broken-in to harness racing, gaining valuable experience in retraining them for new purposes. Marrissa worked for various trainers in different equestrian industries, including thoroughbred breeding studs, racing trainers, and dressage stables, in order to expand her knowledge and skills in working with racehorses.
Marrissa’s dedication to learning about the mindset and expectations of racehorses has allowed her to excel in retraining retired racehorses. Her experience working with different types of racehorses and trainers has given her a unique perspective on how to effectively transition retired racehorses into new careers. Marrissa’s passion for retraining racehorses has led her to become one of the Queensland Off-The-Track Program’s Acknowledged Retrainers, where she continues to make a positive impact on the lives of retired racehorses.
