The Humane Society of Louisiana’s Mardi Gras Horse Adoption Program has been saving parade horses from being sold to slaughter since 2017. They have rescued 106 horses so far, with plans to save 20 more this year. Each horse undergoes a health check-up by a LASPCA vet upon arrival at the stables.
Prospective adopters are warned that the history of these rescue horses is unknown, and they are not recommended for first-time owners. Adopters are encouraged to work with a trainer following the adoption. The nonprofit’s Facebook page showcases the adoptable horses, and horse-loving locals have expressed gratitude for the organization’s efforts in saving these animals. The program aims to find loving homes for all the rescued Mardi Gras horses before the celebrations begin on March 4th.
