Rescuing Farm Animals: The Heartwarming Work of Lancaster Farm Sanctuary

Sarah Salluzzo founded Lancaster Farm Sanctuary in 2017 to rescue farm animals from neglect, abandonment, illness, and injury. The sanctuary provides shelter and a forever home for horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, chickens, turkeys, and ducks. The nonprofit is funded through donations and farm tours, and relies on volunteers to care for the animals and assist in rescues.

The sanctuary started on a five-acre farmette in Elizabethtown before moving to a 20-acre farm in Mount Joy. Salluzzo works with a dedicated group of volunteers and other rescue operations to care for the animals and respond to calls for help. The sanctuary has a yearly budget of half a million dollars and primarily relies on support from individuals, groups, and tours to cover costs.

Lancaster Farm Sanctuary has rescued animals from dire situations, including a case where a dozen neglected sheep were rescued during extremely cold weather. The sanctuary also helped a baby calf named Evan, who was unable to stand on its own. The calf underwent therapy and became part of the sanctuary family. One of the sanctuary’s success stories is Jude, a calf with a cleft who received sanctuary and medical care, and has grown into a strong steer.
