Rescued Mare Solo Recovering After Being Stranded on Lake Powell Beach for 18 Months

A young mare named Solo was rescued and is recovering in southern Utah after being stranded on a remote Lake Powell beach for 18 months. Solo became trapped on the beach when water levels rose, cutting off her escape, and she was the last surviving member of her herd.

Jen Reid from Best Friends Animal Society was part of the team that rescued Solo, using lessons learned from a previous rescue of a mare named Emma and her baby in a similar situation. The rescue for Solo took about four hours, and she is now adjusting to her new home at Horse Haven, although training and socialization will take time.

Reid describes rescues like Solo’s as both challenging and rewarding, and despite not expecting to see a similar situation again, she is grateful to be able to help horses like Solo and Emma. The team is dedicated to progressing the horses through the taming process at their own pace, ensuring their well-being and comfort.
