The Mare and Foal Sanctuary recently rescued three neglected ponies, Hazel, Willow, and Oakley, who were in critical need of care. Hazel arrived at the Sanctuary in a distressed state with sore skin and a lice infestation, while Willow was severely underweight and had dental issues, and Oakley had eye problems. Despite reaching full capacity, the charity made the crucial decision to accommodate all three ponies and provide them with the necessary medical care.
Hazel received treatment for lice and her skin condition improved, while Willow eventually stopped eating and had to be put to sleep due to colic. Oakley, who had blindness in one eye, was closely monitored for two months before the decision was made to put him to sleep as well. The Sanctuary’s field officer expressed gratitude for being able to help the ponies and thanked supporters for enabling the rescue to happen.
The Mare and Foal Sanctuary highlighted the ongoing equine welfare crisis in the south west, where the high cost of living is impacting owners’ ability to care for their horses. Despite running at high capacity, the charity continues to be there for urgent cases like Hazel, Willow, and Oakley. The Chief Executive emphasized the importance of donations in making a significant difference and changing the lives of neglected horses in need of care.
