A herd of rescue donkeys in Wales have helped transform their overgrown grazing land into a Site of Special Scientific Interest, leading to the development of rare mushrooms, flowers, and insects. The donkeys, along with volunteers, cleared the land and created an ideal habitat for various species, including the Crimson Waxcap mushroom.
The sanctuary, Snowdonia Donkeys, was founded by Ruth and Chris Stronge in 2019 on a 13-acre plot of land that was previously a rubbish dump. The land has now become a haven for wildlife, with the donkeys playing a key role in its transformation. The site was recently granted SSSI status, showcasing its importance for preserving Welsh hill farm ecosystems.
In addition to caring for 18 donkeys, Snowdonia Donkeys offers a safe space for people to interact with the animals and escape their worries. The charity hosts various events throughout the week, including classes in donkey care and activities for individuals with learning difficulties. The organization aims to promote the health and well-being of both people and donkeys, providing a unique opportunity for the community to engage with these gentle animals.
