Report Reveals Alarming Training and Racing Fatality Rates in Thoroughbred Industry

A new report from the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority reveals that thoroughbreds are facing significant risks in training, not just on race day. The report shows that racing-related deaths are nearly twice as high at facilities without safety protocols mandated by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, with state-level tracks operating outside of HISA oversight reporting horse deaths at rates 80% higher.

Humane World for Animals and Humane World Action Fund are calling for the adoption of Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act protocols at every track to prevent needless deaths of horses. The organizations emphasize the importance of uniform safety standards across all racing operations to protect these vulnerable animals. The report highlights the need for transparency in the horse racing industry and the importance of implementing minimum safety and anti-doping standards.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Act, along with accountability requirements set by the HISA, provide a framework to reduce horse fatalities and enhance racehorse safety. The report suggests that these measures are beginning to be effective in protecting horses in the racing industry. Humane World for Animals and Humane World Action Fund continue to advocate for reforms in horse racing to ensure the well-being of these majestic animals.
