James (Jimmy) A. Johnson, 89, of Dunnellon, Florida, passed away on February 18, 2025 at the home of longtime friend Bridgett Mason. Jimmy was born in Silver Point, Tennessee in 1936 and began his career as an apprentice jockey in 1951. He went on to win his first race in 1953 at Waterford Park in WV and rode at various tracks across the country before transitioning to a trainer’s license in 1972.
After retiring in 1996, Jimmy and his wife, Patricia, moved to Florida to enjoy their retirement. He is survived by his siblings, two daughters, and two grandsons, and is preceded in death by his wife and other siblings. Jimmy had many friends, including his “adopted” son and daughter, Tom and Bridgett Mason, who made his last years in Florida fulfilling and enriched.
A private burial will be held at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, West Virginia. Those who wish to honor James Johnson’s memory can plant a tree as a living tribute through the Tribute Store. Jimmy’s legacy as a successful jockey and trainer, as well as his lasting friendships, will be remembered by those who knew and loved him.
