Red Route One Dominates in the 2025 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn

Red Route One, ridden by Keith Asmussen, won the Grade 3 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn, finishing 4 1/2 lengths ahead of Tarantino. This victory was a major local prep for the upcoming Oaklawn Handicap. Red Route One, a son of Gun Runner, has previously won multiple graded-stakes races and has now earned over $2 million in his career.

Despite starting off slowly and trailing by 10 lengths early in the race, Red Route One made a strong move on the second turn and ultimately pulled away from the competition in the final furlong. This victory was particularly significant as it was the first time Keith Asmussen rode Red Route One for his father, Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen, and owner Winchell Thoroughbreds.

Red Route One’s victory in the Essex Handicap marked his sixth win in 25 starts, bringing his career earnings to over $2 million. This win came after a disappointing performance in the Razorback Handicap, showing the horse’s resilience and ability to bounce back.
