Dr. William “Bill” McGuire recently accepted a teaching position at Cloud County Community College in Kansas, where he began his teaching career. This job also marked a reunion with Rascal Cat, a 20-year-old stallion that has helped McGuire teach animal science to college students since 2017. McGuire previously owned a farm in Concordia where he had a Thoroughbred breeding operation.
After live racing in Kansas stopped in 2010, McGuire had to look for teaching jobs elsewhere. He started a Thoroughbred breeding program at Arkansas State University and received Rascal Cat from Murray Cluff, who saw potential in the stallion. Rascal Cat had a successful racing career despite not winning any black-type stakes, and he has sired 35 foals of racing age to date.
McGuire found Rascal Cat to be the perfect college stallion due to his temperament and success in siring winners. After the COVID-19 pandemic affected his teaching position at Cazenovia College, McGuire returned to Cloud County Community College in Kansas. With the recent authorization of historical horse racing electronic games in Kansas, McGuire is hopeful for the revival of the state’s Thoroughbred racing and breeding industries.
