Quick Dividend: Flood Zone Earns Spot in Kentucky Derby After Gotham Stakes Win

Flood Zone, a horse purchased privately, won the Gotham Stakes at 17-1 odds and earned a spot in the Kentucky Derby. The victory helped recoup a chunk of the purchase price for owner Wathnan Racing and trainer Brad Cox. The win also earned Flood Zone 50 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby.

Despite not having a two-turn race under his belt, Flood Zone’s connections are considering running him in the Kentucky Derby. Jockey Reylu Gutierrez believes the horse will perform even better at two turns. Trainer Brad Cox is proud of the horse’s performance and is considering the next steps for Flood Zone.

Flood Zone showed speed throughout the Gotham Stakes and pulled away in the stretch to win by 3 1/4 lengths. The victory was a two-horse race between Flood Zone and Sand Devil, with the former coming out on top. Sand Devil picked up 25 qualifying points for the Kentucky Derby, while Garamond received 15. Flood Zone’s connections are now considering the next steps for the horse.
