Protecting Home CDIs: Carl Hester’s Proposal to Keep Domestic Competitions Alive

Carl Hester suggests that home CDIs need to be protected due to the high costs of traveling abroad for competitions. He emphasizes the importance of these shows for international competition opportunities and team qualifications. Hester questions whether riders would be willing to pay slightly more to keep home shows alive, as foreign riders often cannot afford or do not want to compete in the UK unless the prize money is substantial.

As spring approaches, horse owners are encouraged to start planning their competition season and form a fitness plan for their horses. The extra daylight and signs of warmer weather provide an ideal time to prepare for upcoming events. Guidelines for creating a fitness plan are provided, which can be adjusted to suit each horse’s individual needs and requirements.

New whip and spur rules are having a positive impact on riders, as they are now required to consider the use of these aids more carefully. Whips can only be used to back up leg aids, not for discipline or punishment, under British Showjumping rules. The Pony Club has also updated its spur rules to prioritize the horse’s well-being. These changes are aimed at improving understanding and promoting all-round horsemanship among riders and their parents.
