The Powhatan County Trail Master Plan was recently unveiled, created by McGill Associates to research the needs for a cohesive trail system in Powhatan. Through community meetings and surveys, residents expressed a desire for gravel trails, cycling paths, and horseback riding trails that create loops. The plan aims to enhance the quality of life and tourism opportunities in the area.
The master plan is more than just mapping out potential trails, as it is necessary for applying for grants and funding to expand the trail network. Building out the trail network could lead to improvements in parking, lighting, and amenities like bicycle repair stations at trail heads. County leaders will need to formally adopt the plan and prioritize projects they want to see completed.
While the plan can be amended as needed, adopting it shows that the County has done its homework, listened to the public, and understands the different aspects of creating a trail network. The plan is a step towards creating a new culture in Powhatan and improving the overall quality of life in the area.
