Portuguese Equestrian Art Recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage

UNESCO has recognized Portuguese Equestrian Art as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, honoring Portugal’s rich equestrian culture and the heritage of the Lusitano horse breed. The tradition dates back to the 18th century and involves a deep connection between rider and horse, resulting in mesmerizing performances that showcase the beauty and nobility of the Lusitano horse.

The Lusitano breed, known for its agility and bravery, plays a central role in traditional Portuguese bullfighting and excels in high-level dressage. The techniques practiced today stem from ancient military training, evolving into a celebrated art form renowned for its grace and refinement. The Portuguese School of Equestrian Art, dedicated to preserving Portugal’s classical baroque horsemanship traditions, focuses exclusively on the Lusitano breed.

The United States Lusitano Association (USLA) works to preserve and promote the Lusitano horse breed in the United States and Canada, maintaining high standards in collaboration with the Portuguese Lusitano Horse Association (APSL). Equestrian art in Portugal is characterized by harmony, deep respect between rider and horse, and communication without the use of force, with practitioners of all ages participating in the tradition.
