NYRA Cancels Aqueduct Racing Due to Strong Wind Forecast

The New York Racing Association canceled its eight-race card at Aqueduct on Monday due to strong winds forecasted for the New York metropolitan area on President’s Day. The National Weather Service predicted west winds of 23-26 mph with gusts up to 48 mph, following a night with winds blowing at similar speeds. Cold temperatures were also a factor, with wind-chill values making it feel like 15-25 degrees despite a high of 35 degrees.

Due to the weather conditions, Aqueduct will be closed to the public on Monday and simulcasting will not be offered. Live racing is set to resume on Friday with a first post of 1:10 p.m. EST. Horsemen were informed that training will proceed on Monday, but horses will not be allowed to breeze and there will be no gate schooling.

The cancellation of the races was made in consideration of the safety of the horses and jockeys, as well as the public. The decision was influenced by the strong winds and cold temperatures expected throughout the day and into the night. Live racing at Aqueduct is scheduled to resume later in the week, with precautions in place to ensure the well-being of the horses during training.
