New York State Implements Independent Monitor for Thoroughbred Trainer Compliance with Labor Laws

New York State has initiated the process of selecting an independent monitor to oversee Thoroughbred trainer Steve Asmussen’s compliance with labor laws, following past actions against him in New York and Kentucky over wage issues. The monitor will begin on January 1 and ensure that Asmussen abides by all state and federal labor laws.

Brian O’Dwyer, chairman of the New York State Gaming Commission, has expressed doubts about Asmussen’s participation in New York racing and emphasized the importance of ensuring his stable complies with labor laws. O’Dwyer is seeking individuals with experience in labor laws, ideally former prosecutors or judges, to fill the monitor position.

The monitoring agreement between the Gaming Commission and Asmussen states that the license revocation process will be suspended as long as Asmussen complies with labor laws. The monitor will file quarterly reports on Asmussen’s compliance, and if violations are suspected, Asmussen will have 30 days to correct them before further action is taken.
